Responding to an increase in area gun violence, the United Black Christian Clergy started a four-week long construction skills program at Seattle Vocational Institute to provide opportunity for youth in the Central District.  After hearing their story featured on King5, Hermanson reached out to offer guest speakers and content for the program.  This week, Jeff Reinhardt and Shane Webb of Western Washington Sheet Metal JATC stopped by to share apprenticeship information, career opportunities, and lead a take home hands-on activity for the class of eighteen students.  “I didn’t even know these jobs existed,” said student Jesiah, “But now I am very interested!” ... Every year thousands of community volunteers don latex gloves and hair nets at Northwest Harvest’s Kent Distribution Center. Volunteer Coordinator, Elle Hunter, walks them through the steps to either sort gigantic bins of fresh produce or bag up family size portions of dried beans or rice.  Each of these jobs start at the stainless steel sorting tables that are the work horses for over 15,000 volunteer hours annually.  Not surprisingly, the tables occasionally need repairs, but are too large to truck to a fabrication shop to be fixed.  Hermanson Company has had a long-standing relationship with Northwest Harvest as both a fiscal sponsor... Doing laundry is a chore for most teenagers, but coupled with homelessness, having clean clothes is often a luxury for the students at Interagency Academies in Seattle.First Chance Industries works to provide support, such as laundry services, to children who are at-risk, traumatized, marginalized, gang-involved, fostered, and either currently or formerly incarcerated attending one of the 12 Interagency Academies. To embrace the spirit of giving, every year Hermanson Company organizes a charitable drive to benefit a local nonprofit during the holiday season. This year, employees gathered newborn pajamas, onesies, baby shampoo, diapers, receiving blankets, and a plethora of other infant goods to donate to the Pediatric Interim Care Center, The Newborn Nursery located in Kent, Washington. Collection bins were placed in all Hermanson office and shop locations and donations were collected throughout November and the beginning of December.
